What is a PDO thread?
A PDO thread, short for polydioxanone thread, is a biodegradable polyester suture that can be used to perform thread lifts. PDO thread lifts are one of three types of thread lifts that tighten and lift the skin using dissolvable sutures under the skin’s surface. The treatment is fairly quick, usually being performed in less than 45 minutes in a certified medical professional’s office, without the need of a scalpel. While it is a slightly invasive procedure, it is less invasive than the surgery required for a facelift. PDO threads have been around longer than the other two types of thread lifts, which are made out of polylactic acid (PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCA). The material in a PDO thread will break down naturally in the body after roughly 6 months and is made of a colorless polyester. PDO thread lifts can be used in three different compositions – PDO mono threads, PDO cog thread and PDO screw threads. Each composition has its own unique function and purpose when it comes to anti-aging treatment. PDO mono threads stimulate collagen production which helps rejuvenate the skin using smooth sutures. PDO cog threads are used on parts of the face to support and lift where needed through the use of barbs on the thread that latch onto the skin. PDO screw threads are used on sunken parts of the skin to restore volume using multiple intertwined threads.
How long does a PDO thread lift last?
Each individual’s results will be unique to their situation and their body’s ability to heal and break down the PDO threads before repeated treatments are needed. A PDO thread lift will provide immediate results showing improvements to sagging skin once the procedure is completed. The results will typically last for 6 months in most patients, with improvements no longer visible after a year. However, younger patients have been shown to benefit from the procedure for a longer period of time, while older patients who have reduced skin elasticity and poor skin volume due to the natural effects of aging find that their treatments may need to be more frequent. Our team at Maki Wellness Center are trained professionals in PDO thread lift treatments, so we can help you understand how long your results may last, as well as the benefits associated with the procedure.
How many treatments will I need for desired results?
A PDO thread lift will provide immediate results once the sutures have been placed under the skin’s surface, with only a single initial procedure being required for results. As the sutures are dissolvable, the treatment won’t provide permanent results and patients will need to receive additional treatments once they have dissolved. Additional PDO threads can be placed between treatments to provide longevity to the results but aren’t necessary unless the individual wants them. The results will typically last for about six months, so patients will need to be prepared to spend the time and money for PDO thread lift procedures about twice a year. Treatment is less invasive and expensive, but also less permanent than a surgical facelift, while providing similar results.
Do PDO threads build collagen?
PDO threads can stimulate the body’s natural collagen production below the skin’s surface. This is done through the presence of the sutures in the skin which triggers fibroblasts, which are cells found in the body, to increase the natural production of collagen. Collagen production naturally slows down as we age, particularly once we hit 30, which causes the wrinkles and fine lines most commonly associated with aging. Collagen provides the skin with its structure and natural elasticity, to keep it looking young and fresh. By stimulating and increasing the natural production of collagen, a PDO thread lift not only tightens and lifts the skin, but keeps it looking youthful.
